After coming up for air after the GFC, what was next for GWH? Episode Four showcases GWH adapting and pivoting to meet the evolving market.
Prior to the GFC we had begun our journey into multi-storey, with a renovation for Quest. Post GFC we were back developing, re-establishing our path to go higher. We then completed a new build for Quest, cementing our working relationships with the hotel industry. At the time, the region’s visitor economy was firmly being placed in the spotlight. With attractions across the region, from Port Stephens through the Hunter Valley and down the coastline of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, tourism was a sector that could provide and assist the region in transitioning to be what it is today. Mecure Newcastle Airport would be our first multi-storey development and one that notably formed part of the transition of Newcastle.
Next up, a prime site, in Newcastle West. A site central to a changing area and one that supported the revitalisation of Newcastle. Aero, one of the first big changes to the skyline of Newcastle's 'West End', an opportunity GWH had been hunting for. A 14 storey, 45 apartment, Master Builders Award winning development that formed a part of the rejuvenation and changing landscape of our home city. With the strength of the team built and developed, there was confidence we could again succeed. Completed in 2017, Aero set the tone for what lay ahead, delivering 311 apartments over the next 3 years. Housing in the region was changing. Apartments were increasing in popularity and Newcastle was truly shifting to a University town.
