Millhorn - Completed 11 weeks ahead of program

Millhorn Apartments in Wickham is another project GWH are very proud ofThe Millhorn now makes a welcomed contribution to the changing face of Wickham and the revitalisation of Newcastle’s West End.

GWH were contracted by Urbane Developments to build the 40 apartments, architecturally designed by EJE. It was no small feat delivering the building in just 46 weeks, the team managed to overcome many of the challenges the site presented. Demolition of the existing structures began in May of 2017, once the original structures were removed it was realised the existing ground conditions would require some redesign to the original plans. Intelligent design from our preferred structural and geotechnical engineers produced a result that saved both time and money for our client.

Once out of the ground no time was wasted. The tower crane was installed early August 2017 and a great run of weather helped the structure rise up at an impressive rate of one level per week. That’s an 8 storey building in just 2 months! A testament to what can be achieved when we deliver projects The GWH Way.

Hunter Precast and Hunter Instal installed a total of 85 precast concrete panels including double and triple height core panels and double height external wall panels. The largest panel being 13 tonnes. Hunter Structural Steel fitted 17.35 tonnes of steel with Frontline Aluminium sealing the building with 982m² of glazing in the 138 windows and 56 doors.

Equally as impressive was the logistics management of the site, situated in a block with four other developments under construction. Hat’s off to the team, they navigated so many obstacles through co-operation and good communication with the neighbours, undoubtedly contributing to the efficiency of the build.

Internally, the fit out flowed near seamlessly. Our dedicated team of preferred subcontractors went above and beyond on their delivery of this project. Their commitment, the GWH methodology and the dedication of the GWH team allowed us to deliver The Millhorn a MASSIVE 11 WEEKS AHEAD of the contract program. In just 46 short weeks the team delivered an 8 storey, 79 bedroom, 44 car spaced building with two podium level terraces to our very happy client and the equally excited new owners.
